About NICEATM and ICCVAM

In 1997, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), one of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), established ICCVAM to:

  • Coordinate interagency technical reviews of new and revised toxicological test methods, including alternative test methods that reduce, refine, or replace the use of animals
  • Coordinate cross-agency issues relating to validation, acceptance, and national and international harmonization of new, modified, and alternative toxicological test methods

On December 19, 2000, the ICCVAM Authorization Act (Public Law 106-545, 42 U.S.C. 285l-3) established ICCVAM as a permanent interagency committee of NIEHS under NICEATM.

ICCVAM is comprised of representatives from 15 U.S. Federal regulatory and research agencies that use, generate, or disseminate toxicological information. ICCVAM conducts technical evaluations of new, revised, and alternative methods with regulatory applicability. ICCVAM promotes the scientific validation and regulatory acceptance of toxicological test methods that more accurately assess the safety or hazards of chemicals and products and that refine (decrease or eliminate pain and distress), reduce, and/or replace animal use. NICEATM administers ICCVAM and provides scientific and operational support for ICCVAM-related activities. More information about ICCVAM and NICEATM can be found on the NICEATM-ICCVAM web site or obtained by contacting NICEATM (telephone: [919] 541-2384, e-mail: niceatm@niehs.nih.gov).

The following Federal regulatory and research agencies are ICCVAM members:

  • Consumer Product Safety Commission
  • Department of Agriculture
  • Department of Defense
  • Department of Energy
  • Department of Health and Human Services
    • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
